Quarkus MQTT integration starter

This workshop focuses on the consumption of telemetry data, coming from the MQTT integration API of Drogue Cloud.

It will consume data from a public application, which runs on our public sandbox installation, so that the workshop can focus on the cloud side data processing.

Drogue Cloud sandbox

This workshop consumes data from the public sandbox. This allows you to re-use an existing stream of data, without the need to set up your own instance. However, it maybe the that the sandbox is down. We will definitely fix this, but it may take a bit.

Of course, you can also host your own Drogue IoT cloud instance, and even use Minikube or Kind to do so.


The final web dashboard can be viewed with just a web browser, as it is hosted on our sandbox server too. So all that you need is just a web browser.

However, if you want to get a bit more hands-on, you might need some additional pre-requisites.

Local developer setup

For locally running the starter, you will need a standard Java developer setup. A Java 11+ JDK, a code editor or IDE, and the ability to run some commands like mvn.

Deploy to Kubernetes

For this, you will of course need a Kubernetes cluster. If a local test deployment is sufficient for you, then you can also use something like Minikube or Kind.

Instead of setting up your own cluster, you can also use something like the OpenShift Developer Sandbox.

In any case, you will need the kubectl binary on your local machine, and be logged in to your Kubernetes cluster.

Deploy to Kubernetes (using Helm)

You can also deploy the code using Helm. Additionally to a Kubernetes cluster (as described above), you will of course also need the helm binary (version 3.x).
